Girl Scouts in New York City’s Troop 6000, a troop of girls in homeless shelters, are selling their delicious wares in Union Square.
Troop 6000 was created by Giselle Burgess in February 2017 when she and her five kids suddenly became homeless. She became the troop leader, her three daughters joined, and now the troop has nearly 300 members across 12 chapters serving girls across New York’s homeless shelters.

This year, the troop resolved the hurdle by partnering with the Kellogg’s Cereal Cafe in Union Square, where buyers will be able to purchase and pick up cookies.
Jamie Williams from Girl Scouts said that they are currently serving hundreds of girls and women at sites throughout the city, of Greater New York.
Troop 6000’s recruiting specialist said that In Troop 6000′s approximately two dozen members are preparing for the big Union Square cookie sale.
The girls have “been wanting to do this for so long,” Fludd said. “It’s the number one thing they ask.”
Homeless Girl Scout Troop Holds Cookie Sale
There are now 15 sites in the entire city, and the girls are ready to do some big things in the Big Apple! They just announced that they’d be selling cookies for the first time and had a goal of 6,000 boxes, but have already crushed it by selling over 17,000 boxes! The money will go towards funding trips, uniforms and activities for the girls.

According to Girl Scout research Participation in an organization like Girl Scouts gives girls a “stronger sense of self, achieve higher levels of education, and are more likely to reach a higher socio-economic status,”.
“Every girl in the five boroughs of New York City deserves a chance to reach her full potential: to have her eyes opened to possibilities for college and careers, to make loving and supportive friends, to learn from caring female mentors, and to chart her course to achieve her goals. That’s what Troop 6000 is all about,” the Girl Scouts of Greater New York’s website says.
To me Girl Scouts has been a great experience, especially working on Gold Award. We could learn so much about team work, leadership, responsibility, communication etc..,.Girl Scouts has been an excellent outlet for all young girls.It helps to elevate the life of girls by giving them confidence to survive in this society.
